KDE/NX in the Summer of Code

As Google have announced the Summer of Code for 2008, I would rather like to see NX support finally appearing in krdc, KDE’s pet remote desktop connection client.

Back in 2006 I did a fair bit of work on an abstract client library for NX, and in 2007, Urs Wolfer did a fantastic job of cleaning up krdc and making it far easier to add a different backend to it. What I’d like to see is someone come forward this year and tie these two efforts together to make an unbelievably awesome NX client for KDE.

I’ve put up a preliminary proposal at the KDE SoC wiki, and I’m quite happy to mentor the project so long as the KDE demigods agree (Thiago?)

Even better would be merging the compression proxy of NX to trunk X11. That would give all X protocol users the gains. It would also make building those NX clients (with the rest; audio and devices support etc) saner.

I agree, having NX support in Krdc would be awesome. This along with the new tabbed interface would really make it the swiss army knife of remote desktop clients.

Me too. NX support in krdc would be a very good thing.

I’ld also like to see NX support in KDM. In some cases (for example I currently use my room mates old laptop as “thin client” to connect to my desktop, since I have to stay in bed due to illness) starting a full blown KDE Desktop on the client isn’t necessary. So I think the service should be well integrated into KDE, but the client itself shouldn’t have to much KDE dependencies.

I agree. NX support would be very useful in Krdc.
