Now is the time for panic!!!!

Posted by George Wright Wed, 09 Jun 2004 07:15:00 GMT

Yesterday, I took my last Latin exam - A* to come for Latin soon methinks! Although today… Oh dear. I have French Writing, and I’m panicking like mad. I am currently desperately rummaging through all my notes trying to soak up as much as possible.

Gotta go and do some more revision…

kde.org.uk, email, xhtml and DNS

Posted by George Wright Sun, 06 Jun 2004 11:17:00 GMT

Well, seems Chris Howells has registered a new domain for all us KDE United Kingdom junkies out there - get your free kde.org.uk email address today! I now have email addresses @kde.org, @kde.org.uk and @kdemail.net. My, this is fun.. ;)

Also, the DNS for this server is now being hosted by my friend Jim Conner over at a colocation in London.. 2x155Mbps bandwidth.. mmmmm.. nsupdate is a wonderful tool in BIND9 for those of us on dynamic IP addresses.

I have finally got around to updating the main site to be XHTML 1.1 valid, and fixed the CSS for IE 6 users. I don’t know why I bother really - IE users deserve to die in a big chemical fire anyway. :)

And.. finally, I’ve sorted out the email on my server. It no longer forwards to another address, but in fact terminates there on my spool and I use POP3 to download the messages; if anyone else tells me that IMAP4 is better I will surely go mad.

Yay! It arrived!

Posted by George Wright Wed, 02 Jun 2004 21:28:00 GMT

Wahoo - my new phone arrived this morning. Mmmmmmm… gotta love that bluetooth. :) I can now dial up using GSM and connect to my AT&T dialup account and surf the web anywhere.. using my free minutes!

It’s also got this really funky mini golf game like KDE’s Kolf. Ahhhhhh… time wasting galore!

Literature.. phone etc

Posted by George Wright Tue, 01 Jun 2004 12:18:00 GMT

Well, the English Literature went, well, semi-badly. I could have done quite well, or quite badly. Unfortunately, there’s no real way of telling. :(

First half of term ended on Saturday, and I’ve been lazy around since then. It’s so satisfying to do nothing at all.

I also ordered a new phone on Sunday. Hopefully it should arrive tomorrow - brand spanking new Sony Ericsson T610 bluetooth phone . Yay!

English Literature exam tomorrow...

Posted by George Wright Thu, 27 May 2004 21:50:00 GMT

Well, tomorrow is my English Lit exam, and I hopefully will get an A*, although I’m expecting more along the lines of an A.

More amusing things have happened regarding Charlie, but I’m not allowed to repeat them here; to put it bluntly - We Won.

The beginning of a new era

Posted by George Wright Tue, 25 May 2004 21:41:00 GMT

Oh dear, one of our number has become infactuated in a girl from Wycombe Abbey. What a shame. We shall have to deal with this by savage means. We can’t allow someone to make a fool of himself can we? Or can we…? ;)

Neville has, as usual, been stirring trouble up in both camps; still, it’s for the better I suppose… He really is a trouble maker.

Jeff seems intent on destroying my reputation and claiming that I have a girlfriend. In the words of Neville, “I can confirm this rumour is absolutely defunct”. It is scandalous. It is evil. It is just WRONG!

Oh, and the new catchphrase is “Ottthhhhh-key!!!!”.

The end of the weekend...

Posted by George Wright Mon, 24 May 2004 07:24:00 GMT

So; what’s happened this weekend?

Well, yesterday I went home (hooray for Sunday leave!), and didn’t seem to do much, except talk for one hell of a long time with Jeff Snyder on IRC. When I got back, though, the fun started. There was a big party in my room, possibly to do with the amount of fun things there are to do in my room.. ;)

Then, a good friend of mine took the pseudonym of “Neville” and phoned up a girl that apparently wants to contact me, although I have never talked to her. She’s probably interested in me the same way that people are interested with animals in the zoo.

Anyway, to get back to the point, “Neville” put on the most camp voice he could do, and started talking utter gibberish down the phone to this girl “hiiiiiii, I’m Neville…. I’m George’s best friend, and I hear that there’s a rumour going around that he’s gay. I can tell you that rumour is absolutely defunct.. I can’t think who would spread such things - but it can’t be Charlie because he’s so meaty and I love him” yadda yadda yadda..

I must confess it was probably the most funny thing I’ve ever heard in my life. Subsequently, Charlie (another guy in my room who they know) got a text message along the lines of “Whoever is pranking us is VERY good at pretending to be gay”. Oh well.

KLatin et al

Posted by George Wright Sun, 23 May 2004 11:24:00 GMT

Well, today is the release date pinned for KDE 3.3 Alpha 1. Thank goodness it’s only an alpha release and nothing really needs to be done by this stage. KLatin should be in this release in the kdeedu module; I’d be grateful if anyone would try it out for me.

I have received permission to add the Latin “words” dictionary from http://users.erols.com/whitaker/words.htm. It’s going to take a while to implement though - the original parser source is in Ada95, which I have never come into contact with.

And I managed to get most of the doxygen API comments for KLatin done last night. Life is far too productive at the moment! :)

How amusing

Posted by George Wright Sun, 23 May 2004 07:12:00 GMT

Well, last night I was compelled to go to a social at another school. Fun. I am not a sociable person; I did not want to go. So, I took my laptop, my K&R book, my iPod and a whole slew of other stuff, as the KDE 3.3alpha1 deadline is today and I wanted to get as much coding done as possible for this alpha. Unfortunately, as soon as I got there, the laptop and book got confiscated because it made me look too “nerdy” (anything wrong with that?), but I was still wearing a T-Shirt with a HUGE K on the front (from the KDE project - http://www.kde.org), and generally poo-pooing the entire party. I do not approve of compulsary socials at all. And I approve of them even less when it’s organised smack in the middle of GCSEs.

Hopefully, after the disaster that was last night, I will never get told I must attend a social ever again. Unfortunately, I don’t think I made as big an impact as anticipated (I was, of course, hampered by the confiscation of the laptop), so my ultimate goal may not have been achieved. What a shame.

FsPHPGallery

Posted by George Wright Sat, 22 May 2004 12:49:00 GMT

I’ve been hacking around on FsPHPGallery for the past day or so, and so far I’ve managed to get the image resizing to work nicely with small images (with height < 960 pixels), and also for images with a non-standard aspect ratio. See my handiwork at http://www.gwright.org.uk/images. :)

FsPHPGallery’s site is at http://gallery.devrandom.org.uk.
